Swordfishing in November 2015 with a 7 fish trip!

I was able to fish 6 swordfish charters here the first couple weeks of November. I had to cancel a few days cause the wind, but since I can’t control the weather it’s just part of the game. On the first trip we had a group of family and friends out and wound up catching one fish around 60 lbs and losing a couple more. We also caught a decent bull mahi around 15 lbs.

The next trip we went to the same area as the day before, and finally at 2 pm we hooked up. The fight was short lived though and after 15 minutes we pulled the hook on the fish. We fished another hour and a half, but no more bites. I had Cathy out again the next day and I told her we’d get one today! She had been out with a couple very good captains before and lost swordfish, and then lost one with me the day before, so I knew we needed to get her a fish! Sure enough we found some fish on a ledge and wound up catching 3 of 4 bites. We tagged and released 2 of the fish and kept a 75 lber for dinner.

A couple days later I had Pete, his sister, and two of their friends out. Pete won a full day trip I donated to one of George Poveromo’s National Fishing Seminars. He really wanted to swordfish so he paid the difference and we headed out to the sword grounds. We had already cancelled this trip multiple times due to weather and broken boats, but trust me, it was worth the wait! We fished 2 rods the entire day, and wound up making 6 drifts. We had bites on every drop! We hooked 9 fish and landed 7 of them! Everyone got to land a swordfish! None of the fish were monsters, but it was an action packed day. The smallest was 30 lbs and the biggest was right about 80 lbs. I know it’s a day I won’t forget and I think Pete and his friends will remember it too.

The next day I was super excited to get back out there for swords after the epic trip the day before. One thing you learn about swordfishing after doing it a while is it’s unpredictable! We fished hard and tried the same area for hours and then even moved to a few more spots. We finally got a bite at 12:30, which turned out to be a splendid alfonsino. At 2:30 we finally got a sword bite. Jen was up on the rod and she brought in her first ever swordfish. It was a 40 lber and we tagged and released the fish. I was happy we got one because there is a huge difference between one and none! We made a couple more drifts and right at the end hooked up. It wasn’t a sword though, a shark ate the bait and eventually bit through the leader.

The last trip I had young Brendan and his dad out. I went to a different area this day trying to find a little more current. The bite was slow but finally at 1:00 pm we hooked up. It was a small swordfish, around 25 lbs, but it was Brendan’s first ever swordfish nonetheless. We took a few pics and then made another drop. No bites. On the way home we caught a keeper tripletail and a schoolie mahi.

I have some days open this winter for swordfish, but we are getting away from what I consider the prime months to swordfish. Don’t get me wrong, we still catch swordfish in the winter, but the weather can be tough if we have passing cold fronts and we just don’t have the numbers as we do in the summer and fall. Send me an email to floridakeysswordfishing@gmail.com if you’d like to try your luck!
