Swordfish Bait Preparation

It’s been an unusually windy summer here so far in Islamorada, Florida Keys. The Swordfishing was a little tough our last trip. We hooked a decent fish but unfortunately pulled the hook after about 5 minutes. From there the squalls started to build and we were chased home early by heavy rains and strong winds. I had a bunch of great daytime swordfish bait though and I didn’t want to waste it. I filleted the bonitos we had in the cooler and then cut strips out of them. I thinned the strips down to about 1/3 of an inch in thickness and then salted them. From there I vacuum sealed them and put them in the freezer. Since you never know when bait will be tough to come by it’s always a good idea to put a little away for your next trip. I prefer a 10/0 hook with a medium sized skirt over one end of the bonito strip. Check out our daytime swordfish tackle as well!
