Mid to Late May 2015 swordfishing report

Well we had a few calm days here the past week, but unfortunately we’ve had more windy days. Capt. Scott on the Catch 22 fished 2 days with Everett from Texas, who said he wanted to see a swordfish, as it was on his bucket list. The first day was rough and they dropped for a few hours, but without any action they called it quits. They did catch some mahi on the way in and out. The next day was a different story. It was rough again, but this time they weren’t giving up easy! I fished a sword trip on the Bn’M that day as well. The Catch 22 missed one fish early in the day, and we missed a couple bites on the Bn’M. We finally hooked up, and had a fish on for 10 minutes after lunch, but unfortunately we pulled the hook. We didn’t get any more bites in the afternoon, but Everett hooked up on the Catch 22 late in the day. It was an hour battle, but in the end they were victorious and boated a 262 lb broadbill! Congrats Everett!

I fished the next day for swords as well. We missed one really cheap bite in the morning that we didn’t see, and with it  being rough it makes it very difficult to spot the bite when they whack the bait down 1600′. We watched the rod tip like a hawk the next 6 hours and nothing. We caught 2 mahi while drifting. Finally at 3:45 pm we had a bite. The fish came off though after a minute. It was 4:15 now and I said if we made one more quick drop we’d have a shot. Sure enough we did the exact same drift and we got our bite. The fish finally at the bait, and after a 25 minute battle we had a 90 lber on the deck of the Bn’M!

My next trip I had Leon out on the Bn’M. The first drop we didn’t have any bites. I moved a mile further, and within 5 minutes of the 2nd drop we hooked up. It was a nice fish. He raced the lead up and slacked the line for a couple minutes. The fish made a great jump 50′ from the boat, and then went back down a couple hundred feet. Over the next 45 minutes we played tug of war with the fish, with the windon leader coming on and off the reel. The fish finally gave up and we sank the gaffs into a 230 lb broadbill. It was the biggest one Leon had boated with me the last couple of years so we were very happy.

The next drop we hooked up again. Randy worked the reel, but the fish got away 100′ from the boat. We re rigged and dropped again. We drifted about 45 minutes and we got another bite. The fish turned out to be a 50 lb broadbill. We were happy going 2 for 3 on swords, and called it a day after that.

My next trip was a fun trip with my Dad and Sara. I had a charter cancel last minute, and with the slick calm conditions I couldn’t pass up the day. We took the bay boat out, and headed out with the Shimano Beastmaster 9000. We caught a couple mahi on the way to the sword grounds. Our first 2 drops were quite, but on the 3rd drop we hooked up. We wound up tagging and releasing a 50 lb broadbill swordfish. When we released the fish it swam around the boat for over 10 minutes, and was really cool to watch.

We hooked up again the next drop, but pulled the hook 600′ away. We made a few more drops and had one other quick bite. On the way home we caught a handful of mahi and did a couple deep drops with the chicken rig. After we put a 15 lb snowy grouper in the boat we called it a day.

It looks like the wind is going to settle a little later this week, and I have a few trips booked so hopefully I’ll have another good report for you. Send me an email to floridakeysswordfishing@gmail.com if you’d like to book a swordfish charter.
