Chasing Broadbills in Late July

The week after the July full moon was pretty good fishing for broadbill swordfish. We caught fish on the Bn’M II on 4 out of 5 swordfish trips.  We caught 2 fish out of 3 bites one day, about 50 and 60 lbs. The next day we caught a healthy 201 lb broadbill that fought as hard as any I’ve ever seen, taking 3 hours to land!  The following day they shut down on us, making 10 drops with out a bite. And the day after that we made 10 drops and had 3 bites, catching one fish about 75 lbs and losing another 100′ away. Our last successful trip we had 1 bite and landed a healthy 141 lb sword, the angler also got to wear the “squid head” since it was his first swordfish!  After that decent stretch however the fishing got a little tough again. We fished 3 more days and had a couple bites the last day, but wound up pulling the hooks after a few minutes. I think the bite will pick back up, and when swordfishing in Islamorada  it only takes one bite to have a great day! The Fall months were great last year, and with the fishing being a little slower than usual this year so far, I think we might have a big push of fish coming soon!
