About Daytime Swordfishing

Our History

The boys from Bud N’ Mary’s caught their first daytime swordfish in January of 2003. In 2006 we started catching impressive numbers and we had a streak between September 2006-October 2007 where we caught 1 or more swordfish on 53 consecutive trips.

The most swords boated in a single day is 7. Captains Richard, Scott, and Nick Stanczyk along with Capt. Vic Gaspeny are the true pioneers of daytime swordfishing in the U.S. Between our boats we have caught over 1000 daytime broadbill swordfish.

How we swordfish

In the daytime we typically fish depths in the 1400′ – 1800′ range. We have all sorts of different tackle set ups including IGFA legal conventional outfits and rigs, electric assist reels, and just plain electric reels.  If you are partial to any particular type of tackle please let us know beforehand so we can rig accordingly.

The average running distance to the swordfish grounds is anywhere from 25 to 45 miles from Islamorada. Unlike fishing at night, in the day time we usually fish just one rod at a time. There’s no guarantee you will catch a daytime swordfish, but your chances are pretty good when fishing with our crew. We typically use an 80 class reel with 80 lb braided line.

Most of the fish tend to swim to the surface at first, where you bring up  almost all the line on without feeling any sort of resistance. If the fish is of any size, they usually dive back towards the bottom, and the real fight begins. Many fights last over an hour (multiple hours on big fish), but some battles only last 15 minutes.
