9-27-12 Nice Broadbill for the Catch 22

Capt. Scott left the dock at Bud N’ Mary’s Marina early Thursday morning in search of broadbill swordfish. On the way out they stopped by one of the Humps off Islamorada and caught about 10 blackfin tuna, as well as a few skipjack tuna. After leaving the hump with some fresh sword bait they made it out to the swordfish grounds and we ready to drop. Before they could drop some mahi swam up and they wound up catching about 15 in all. Now it was time for some Daytime Swordfishing! The first drop they got a bite very quickly, but just couldn’t get the fish hooked. The next couple hours we made 2 more good drifts, but no action. Capt. Scott reset and the crew sent down a fresh bait. Within minutes they hooked a sword. The fish fought extremely hard and took almost 2 hours to bring boatside! They decided to keep the fish and bring it back to the marina where it weighed 193 lbs on the Scale. The Next two months are prime time for swordfish here off Islamorada, so keep looking for reports or come get in on the action yourself.
