8-19-13 Islamorada Swordfish Charters

2013 has been the toughest year we have seen swordfishing in Islamorada. We’ve had some good catches, but there’s been some really slow days mixed in. One day we have multiple bites and the next couple trips we get none. The Catch 22 with Capt. Scott Stanczyk daytime swordfished 3 days the past week and the first two days they had no bites. Yesterday afternoon at 2 p.m. they were on their 5th drop, and hadn’t yielded a bite yet. But when swordfishing our favorite saying is “you’re only one bite away from being a hero” , and that’s the case many days. Well on that 5th drop, after 10 minutes into the trip the tip bounced and they knew they had a swordfish interested in the bait. After a minute of playing around with it the fish ate the bait and pulled hard along the bottom. The fish then raced to the surface like most of them do, and after only a 20 minute fight they sunk the gaffs into a nice 237 lb broadbill swordfish! The fight should have taken hours, but sometimes you get lucky! The guys were happy and decided to get it mounted as well to hang it up in their house back in Texas. On the Bn’M II we did a 30 hour swordfish charter leaving saturday morning and fishing all afternoon, then all night, and 1/2 of Sunday Morning. We only had 1 cheap bite in the daytime and then one mystery bite at night. I couldn’t believe we didn’t catch a swordfish! But that’s fishing! Last Thursday though we made 3 drops in the afternoon and had 2 bites, and luckily caught them both. One was a decent broadbill swordfish at 95 lbs, and the other fish was around 50 lbs, which we tagged and released. I hope the bite becomes more consistent soon, but if not, we will really appreciate our good days that much more. These next few months are my favorite time to fish, so I think we’ll see some big swords along the way!
