7-23-13 Daytime Swordfish Report for Islamorada

It hasn’t been an easy season here swordfishing in Islamorada. We have been working extremely hard to get bites on trips, some trips yielding fish and some not. It’s called fishing for reason, and targeting swordfish with rod and reel takes patience and dedication. It may take all day for a bite or two, then you have to hook a fish that’s 1500′ away. However, for those who don’t give up, your time will come. The last two days I had Mack from Georgia down in search of broadbill swordfish. He had traveled many people chasing billfish, but the swordfish was still on his list. The second drift we made we hooked up the other day. The fish raced around deep, and then rocketed towards the surface. I knew it had to be a good size fish because of how fast it was moving. After about 20 minutes a 150 lb broadbill broke the surface swinging his sword from side to side. After about a 40 minute fight the fish was ours! The next day we made 7 drifts, and producing 1 bite. Fortunately we hooked the fish and got the release on about a 60 lb broadbill swordfish. I got some cool underwater pics of the fish near the boat too. We caught about 15 mahi each day too, which is a bonus when you daytime swordfish charter this time of year in Islamorada. The trip before these two we fished all day, with no sword bites, but we did release two night sharks up to 150 lbs.
