6-20-13 Islamorada Swordfish Report

Well it’s starting to seem a little bit like last year. June was when it started getting consistent for broadbill swordfishing in the Florida Keys, and the last couple days here it’s been the same. Today we caught a few blackfin tuna and dolphin on the way out to the swordfish grounds, and then started making some swordfish drifts. We had a couple cheap bites early, the fish just weren’t feeding, and then we had a really good bite, that gave us a few chances, but we just couldn’t hook it. The next drop we got a bite on the way down, and I thought we had a swordfish, but it wound up being about a 175 lb mako shark, we took a few pics and then released it. It was my first mako in 7 years! The last drop of the day though we got the bite we wanted and after 45 minutes we caught about a 110 lb daytime swordfish. Yesterday we ran really far, and luckily had the new boat, Bn’M II, so I had the speed to run almost 50 miles, and we managed 2 swordfish bites, catching a nice fish around 130 lbs. Capt. Scott on the Catch 22 fished the day before that and found some bait way down the road and he caught a small sword around 70 lbs and missed another one that day, they also caught about 30 dolphin. That same day I fished a close spot to home, but it was just dead, no life nor bait, and unfortunately we never had a bite, but luckily Scott steered me in the right direction the following day. The Catch 22 also fished another swordfish charter the week before and caught 2 broadbills around 50 lbs and released a 200 lb longfin mako shark. All in all the bite hasn’t been red hot, but we’ve been getting a couple chances each day and both of us have caught fish on 2 of our last 3 trips. The next few months is prime season so send me an email and book your trip! floridakeysswordfishing@gmail.com
