5/14/15 Islamorada Swordfishing May 2015

I’ve made it out on 3 different daytime swordfishing charters the past couple weeks. May can be tough sometimes with the winds, but it is one of my favorite months to fish. Our first trip I fished on my friends center console. It was a nice ride out, but the wind did pick up throughout the day. The morning was very quite, but around 2 p.m. we finally got a bite. The fish was a hungry one, and inhaled the bait. Ray worked the fish up on the hooker electric reel, and after 20 minutes we had a 75 lb sword boat side. We decided to keep the fish for dinner so we brought it aboard, took some pics, and put the fish in the bag. It was getting a little stormy after that, so we made one more drop, but with no bite we decided to run in after that. It was a rough and wet ride home in 18 – 20 knot winds, but everything was good because we had fresh sword steaks for dinner!

My next trip was on the Bn’M. I had Neil and his family out. They never had been swordfishing and said they wanted to take the gamble and see what we could do. We missed a small bite the first drop. The next drop we sent down a fresh bait and this time we got tight. We hooked the fish on the hooker electric, and then took off the detachable drive and got the rod in the chair. It was a 25 minute fight, and by 10:30 am we had our first swordfish to the boat. We took a few quick pics and then released the fish to fight another day.

The next couple hours were slow, but then late in the afternoon we got another shot. We hooked up around 3 pm, but I had a feeling the fish was foul hooked. The fought it in the chair, but at some point the fish came off, and the bait was still in good shape. With the bait in good shape it really made me believe the fish was foul hooked. We sent the bait down again for one more shot, and sure enough after 20 minutes we got a bite. This time the fish ate it. We used the electric assist and after 20 minutes we had a 60 lb sword in the boat. It wasn’t a monster but it was a keeper. We took a few pics and we headed back for the dock.

My last swordfishing trip was on the Catch 22, where Capt. Scott and I teamed up. We caught a few tuna in the morning, and a handful of mahi. One was a big bull so that was a good start to the day.

It was pretty windy, and 2 of the 3 people unfortunately got sea sick. They still wanted to run to the sword grounds and give it a shot. We ran another 12 miles, and sent down a bait. Squids ate our bait up the first drop, but we knew there was bait in the area. The next drop we hooked up. We were using the Shimano Beastmast9000. It’s a neat reel, which is super light weight and has handle built in on the side. We used both the electric and hangle to bring up the fish. It wasn’t a monster , but it was a sword. After 15 minutes Randy released his first ever swordfish.

We called it a day after that and headed back to Bud n’ Mary’s. The next few months are prime swordfishing time, so send me an email at floridakeysswordfishing@gmail.com if you’d like to take your a shot at getting a broadbill.
