5-1-13 Pair of Broadbills!

Here’s my latest swordfishing report. Now the bite has been tough past few months, but I knew it was just a matter of time till things started to pick up, and they finally did. We fished on May 1st and made 5 drops/drift. On our very first drop at 10 a.m. we hooked up and caught about a 50 lb broadbill swordfish. It wasn’t a monster but my saying is ” a sword’s a sword”. It was quite the next couple hours, but then we got the bite we were looking for. Sara got in the chair and went to work on a good size fish. The fish raced to the surface at a blistering speed, and she picked up the slack line. We finally came tight on the fish about 300′ away the fish swam towards the boat, getting about 20′ away before taking a good run. About 20 minutes later Sara got the fish up near the boat again and I was able to hit it with my swordfish harpoon and then Hank stuck a gaff in the fish. The sword weighed in at 176 lbs. On the way home we also picked up a dozen mahi, which is common in the late spring and summer months. I have some more trips coming up in the next couple weeks so hopefully I’ll have some more daytime swordfish to report!
