10-22-12 October Swordfishing on the BNM

Conditions were less than ideal today off Islamorada for Daytime Swordfishing. We had 20+ knot winds, 5 to 10 foot seas, and really put the BNM to the test. I was a little nervous on the ride out, thinking that maybe we should turn around. I knew the fishing would be quite difficult with the high seas and high winds. After 2 hours we made it out to the Sword Ledge and sent a bait down. Unfortunately we lost a bilge pump and had quite a bit of water in the hull, but after about 30 minutes we had it all pumped out. Right when we were finishing up the pump out I looked at the rod and saw the rod tip bounce. After a minute we were hooked up. Des Green came all the way from New Zealand in search of his first Broadbill, and he was tight in the chair! Unfortunately after about 2o minutes we pulled the hook. Des was happy to have hooked one, but was heart broken when the fish got off. We sent down a fresh bait and drifted for an hour, but no bite. The seas continued to build, but we decided to make one more drop before throwing in the towel. Well after about 20 minutes of drifting we got another bite. The fish ate the bait and made a nice run on the bottom, indicating it was a nice size broadbill. Des got back in the chair and the fish came up quick! After about 20 minutes we had the fish on the leader and Matt got a straight gaff into the fish. I ran back from the helm and got another straight gaff in the fish and he went ballistic! We stuck the flying gaff in the fish a few seconds later and it ripped out! We got the flying gaff back into the fish and after about 5 minutes the fish bled out and was subdued. We pulled the fish over the gunnel, took a few pictures and gave some high fives, and starting chugging back for Bud N’ Mary’s Marina. The swordfish was bigger than I thought, it measured an 81” fork length, and weighed in at 235 lbs! Congrats Des on the fish of a lifetime!!!
