10-20-12 Two more swords Angler Vic

Capt. Richard Stanczyk was able to get his good friend Vic Gaspeny (both pioneers of daytime swordfishing in the US) out for some deep drop swordfishing yesterday. They left the dock at Bud N’ Mary’s Marina at 7 a.m. and headed deep. Capt. Nick Stanczyk was out of town for a few days but the Old Guys kept the tradition alive by putting broadbills on the deck. The first drop they missed a fish. So they re rigged and sent down another bait. They got another bite but the fish just woudn’t eat the bait, only whacked it around a little bit. The next bite however was much more aggressive and Vic caught about a 60 lb swordfish. Hunter rigged up a fresh mahi belly and Vic dropped it down. After a few minutes they got a bite. Vic got in the chair and went to work. After 20 minutes they got a look at the fish, and realized it was a big broadbill. The fish made a 1500′ run, slowly and steadily back down. Vic worked the fish back up to 30′ away, which took an hour, but the fish took another blistering run 1200′ back down! Vic had to pull him up this time which took another 40 minutes, but Hunter was able to sink the gaffs into a fat 365 lb Broadbill Swordfish! It was Vic’s 203rd fish as an angler and his 3rd biggest ever! It was a great fish on conventional tackle.
